Postbank has confirmed a major deadline for social grant beneficiaries who are still using SASSA gold cards. Beneficiaries must switch to the new Postbank black card by 31 August 2026 or risk disruption to their grant payments.
The replacement programme will begin its latest phase on 29 April 2026, targeting all beneficiaries who have not yet migrated from the old gold card system. Postbank said the move forms part of a wider migration process that began in September 2024.
According to the bank, the message is clear: after the deadline, SASSA gold cards will stop working.
Gold Cards Will Stop Working After 31 August
Postbank warned that beneficiaries who do not have a black card after 31 August 2026 will no longer be able to access their SASSA grant payments through the old gold card.
This means pensioners, disability grant recipients, child grant beneficiaries and other social grant users who still rely on gold cards must complete the switch before the deadline.
Postbank chief commercial officer Thamsanqa Cele urged beneficiaries to act quickly, saying the replacement process has entered its final stage. He also made it clear that the deadline will not be extended.
No Action Needed for Existing Black Card Users
Beneficiaries who have already switched to the Postbank black card do not need to do anything further. Their cards remain valid and will continue working for grant payments.
Postbank said the black card includes several benefits for users. These include three free withdrawals, one free card replacement, and one free monthly statement.
The bank also said the black card helps protect accounts from unauthorised deductions and safeguards personal information from misuse. For this reason, Postbank said beneficiaries do not need to switch to another bank if they already have the black card.
Where Beneficiaries Can Collect New Black Cards
SASSA beneficiaries can collect the new Postbank black cards for free at selected retail outlets across South Africa.
These collection points include:
| Retail Outlet | Card Collection Available |
|---|---|
| Shoprite | Yes |
| Checkers | Yes |
| Usave | Yes |
| Pick n Pay | Yes |
| Boxer | Yes |
| Spar | Yes |
Postbank said beneficiaries do not need to complete forms to receive the new card. They only need to present a valid South African ID or a temporary ID.
Cards can also be collected in any province, regardless of where the grant was originally approved. This is expected to help beneficiaries who have moved or who live closer to a collection point outside their original application area.
New Cards Work Immediately
Postbank confirmed that the new black cards work immediately after they are issued. Beneficiaries do not need to visit a SASSA office to activate the card.
Any remaining money on the old gold card will automatically be moved to the new black card. This means beneficiaries should not lose their remaining grant balance during the switch.
To find the nearest replacement site, beneficiaries can dial 120355# from their mobile phones.
Fraud Warning for Beneficiaries
Postbank has also warned grant recipients to be careful of scams during the card migration process.
The bank said a genuine Postbank black card must have Postbank written on the front. Beneficiaries should be suspicious if they are asked to complete forms to make a card work or change their payment method.
Postbank said no forms are required for the official black card replacement process. Anyone who is unsure can contact Postbank on 0800 53 54 55 for help.
Conclusion
The Postbank black card deadline is an important warning for all SASSA beneficiaries still using gold cards. With the final date set for 31 August 2026, recipients should not wait until the last minute to complete the switch.
The new card is free, works immediately, and can be collected at selected major retailers without visiting a SASSA office.
For millions of grant recipients, making the change on time will be essential to avoiding payment interruptions and keeping access to monthly support secure.
